If you are gearing up for Aion 2, one of the first and most important choices you will face is picking a side. The game divides its world and its community into two distinct playable factions: the Elyos and the Asmodians. Standing right between them is a third, non-playable faction—the Balaur—serving as the main villain group trying to tear everything down.
The good news for anyone worried about competitive balance is that your choice of faction will not lock you out of any specific playstyles. Both sides have equal access to all eight launch classes: Gladiator, Templar, Assassin, Ranger, Sorcerer, Spiritmaster/Elementalist, Cleric, and Chanter. Instead of gating performance or abilities behind a faction wall, Aion 2 differentiates them through their unique visual styles, environmental vibes, server setups, and historical backgrounds.
The Two Playable Factions

Choosing between the Elyos and the Asmodians structuralizes where and how you spend your time in the game, splitting the player base down two entirely different ideological and visual paths.

1. The Elyos

The Elyos live on the sunlit, well-preserved side of the shattered world of Atreia. Because their homeland escaped the worst of the cataclysm, they view themselves as the rightful, classical protectors of the world’s divine legacy.
  • Visual Design: They feature a highly traditional, angelic appearance with classic human-like features.
  • Wings & Armor: Their character design is defined by soft, feathered, golden-white wings and elegant armor regalia decorated with pristine, celestial flourishes.
  • Environment: When running around Elyos territories, you will spend your time in vibrant, lush green jungles, sunlit forests, and highly structured, clean architectures.
  • Back Ornament: To identify them quickly from behind, their armor profiles feature a distinct yellow scarf on the back.

2. The Asmodians

On the flip side, the Asmodians are survivors who were separated into a dark, frozen, and brutal part of Atreia. Generations spent in this harsh environment have physically adapted them into more rugged, resilient combatants.
  • Visual Design: They carry a dark, demonic aesthetic. You will notice pale bluish or greenish skin tones, claws on their hands and feet, and sharp glowing red eyes that ignite whenever they enter combat mode.
  • Wings & Armor: Their wings are dark and spiked, and their gear leans heavily into battle-worn, tribal-influenced armor plating.
  • Environment: Their starting zones and capital cities feature dim, mystical landscapes, jagged frozen tundras, and massive, dark, industrial-tribal strongholds.
  • Back Ornament: Instead of a scarf, Asmodians possess a thick, spiky, gray-haired mane running down their backs—a unique evolutionary trait that helps them withstand their region's freezing climate.

Core Structural Differences

While combat metrics remain entirely symmetrical to preserve strict PvP and PvE balance, picking a faction determines the exact frame for your multiplayer journey.

  • Server Segmentation: Unlike typical MMORPGs where opposing factions share the exact same open server boundaries, Aion 2 forces the faction binary onto separate dedicated server layers. You won't seamlessly cross paths with players of the opposing faction during normal questing unless you are actively participating in specific cross-realm events or jumping through dimensional rifts.
  • Rift Encounters (PvPvE): While exploring high-level PvE dungeons and open-world areas, gates and portals will randomly fracture the landscape. These rifts allow the opposing faction to invade your zone and ambush your party midway through boss fights, creating dynamic, unpredictable faction clashes when you least expect them.

The Common Enemy: The Balaur

Regardless of whether you choose to sport golden feathers or grow a spiky mane, both sides share a mutual, burning hatred for the Balaur (The Dragon Clans).
  • NPC-Only Threat: The Balaur are a massive, non-playable antagonist faction made up of powerful sub-races like the Ancient Drakan, Draconute, and Naga.
  • Disruptive Gameplay Impact: Think of them as a chaotic wild card. Their forces regularly drop out of the sky into maps to attack both Elyos and Asmodian sectors. Every now and then, a Balaur assault can be so overwhelming that it forces temporary, uneasy coordination between opposing players just to survive the PvE onslaught.

Your ultimate choice comes down to style and worldview: do you want to defend a divine destiny in sunlit forests, or fight for raw survival in the dark, frozen wastes? Pick the vibe that suits you best, and prepare for the rifts to open.
